How to Make Press-On Nails Last Longer in Winter

by Angela

Cold hands, hot showers and a slightly obsessive relationship with hand cream. Winter brings a few extra things to consider when wearing press-on nails - but a little preparation goes a long way!

Here’s how to help your jelly nail tabs hold through jumper season.

1. Warm up before you press on

If you’ve just come in from the cold, let your hands, press-ons and jelly tabs reach a comfortable room temperature before applying. Cold tabs can feel firmer and be harder to mould into place.

Comfortably warm is the goal. Your manicure does not need roasting.

2. Save the hand cream for later

We love moisturised hands. Adhesive tabs prefer clean, dry nails.

Before application, gently push back your cuticles, lightly buff away surface shine and wipe each nail with an alcohol prep pad. Let it dry completely, and avoid hand cream or cuticle oil immediately beforehand.

Once your nails are securely applied, keep moisturising - just avoid working oils underneath the edges.

3. Get the fit right - and give each nail a proper press

Choose a press-on that fits without touching the surrounding skin. Your jelly tab should cover as much of the natural nail as possible without overlapping the cuticle.

Apply the press-on at a slight angle (45 degrees is a tried and tested optimal), lower it into place and press firmly across the whole nail for around 30 seconds, including the sides. Good contact matters more than rushing through all ten.

For the full routine, see our guide to making press-on nails last longer with jelly tabs.

4. Time your manicure around your shower

A long, hot bath immediately after application is not your manicure’s best friend.

Avoid touching water for at least two hours after applying your Fette nails. Before bed is a particularly convenient time: shower first, let your nails dry fully, then apply your set.

Wear washing-up gloves for dishes and cleaning, and gently pat your hands dry after washing.

5. Watch the winter snags

Pull gloves on carefully and avoid using your nails to wrestle open parcels or lift stubborn lids. If a nail starts lifting, remove it gently, clean and dry both surfaces, and reapply with a fresh tab.

What about combining jelly tabs and nail glue?

Although Fette doesn’t sell nail glue, some of our customers swear by the combination method: using a smaller jelly tab in the centre of the natural nail with a little nail glue around its edges. This will provide extra hold while limiting direct glue contact, but bear in mind this will not guarantee damage-free wear: make sure you keep glue off the skin and follow its application and removal instructions. To reuse your press-ons, you’ll need to gently buff away any remaining glue from their underside, taking care not to thin or damage the set. You can find a brush on nail glue easily and cheaply on Amazon.

A little extra prep, fewer hot-water surprises, and your winter manicure is ready for its close-up.
