How to Apply Press-On Nails

Here is the easiest way to apply press-on nails at home for a clean, salon-looking finish.
What you need
You will need:
- Press-on nails
- Nail tabs
- Cuticle pusher (optional)
- Nail file or buffer
- Alcohol wipe or nail cleanser
Step 1: Choose your sizes
Make sure you have chosen the right sized press-on nail for your natural nails before applying.
The press-on should cover your nail from side to side without touching your skin. If a nail feels slightly too wide, gently file the sides for a better fit. And if the nails feel too curved, gently press them against the side of a cup containing hot water to flatten them.
Step 2: Prep your natural nails
Wash and dry your hands, then gently push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher or even just the back of your press-ons.
Lightly buff the surface of your natural nails (vertical buffing is gentler to your nailbeds) to remove shine, then clean each nail with an alcohol wipe. This removes oil and helps the adhesive grip properly.
***note: you may wish to use more than one alcohol pad per hand if your nails are on the oilier side, as this ensures any dust or oil residuals are completely removed.
Step 3: Apply tabs
For short-term wear up to 10 days and easy removal, use adhesive nail tabs. They are ideal if you want to reuse your press-ons or change your nails often.
For extra stickiness, heat up your tabs under a cup of hot water before applying, or simply blow-dry your fingertips with warm air once the tabs are on (with the top film still attached to the tabs). The tabs get stickier when warmed up.
***note: do NOT touch the tabs once the protective film is off! This transfers unwanted dust and oil onto the tabs and will in turn make them less sticky.
Step 4: Press and hold
Place the press-on nail close to your cuticle line at a 45 degree angle, then push towards the cuticle whilst pressing down firmly for 20–30 seconds.
Apply even pressure across the whole nail, especially at the sides and near the cuticle, to ensure no air is trapped between the tab and your nails.
***note: for girlies with flatter or downward bending nails, cut a small piece of tab to fill the gaps where needed.
Step 5: Avoid water
Avoid water, steam, hand cream and oil for the first few hours after applying your press-on nails. This helps the adhesive bond properly and can make your manicure last longer.
How long do press-on nails last?
Press-on nails can last from one day to over a week, depending on your prep, adhesive and lifestyle.
Nail tabs are best for temporary wear and reusability.
Do press-on nails damage your nails?
Press-on nails should not damage your natural nails when applied and removed properly. Most damage happens when nails are forced or peeled off.
To remove press-ons safely, soak them in warm soapy water and gently lift them from the sides before going inwards. Never rip them off.
Fette tip
For the best result, apply your press-on nails before bed. This gives the adhesive time to bond before washing your hands, showering or using hand cream in the morning.
